Recently, Professor YI Tinghua of Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture (BUCEA) was elected a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and awarded the Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. The certificates were presented by Professor Bob Cryan, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and Honorary President of the IET.
Founded in 1871 and headquartered in London, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is one of the world’s leading professional engineering organizations. The IET covers five major technical sectors, including transport and built environment, spanning more than 40 disciplines. It has approximately 160,000 members across 148 countries and regions. Fellowship is the Institution’s highest category of membership and is awarded to professionals who have made outstanding contributions to science and engineering. Around 200 Fellows are elected worldwide each year.
The IET is also a professional engineering institution licensed by the Engineering Council (UK) to assess and award professional engineering qualifications. It was granted a Royal Charter by the UK Privy Council in 1921. The Engineering Council’s professional registration framework includes three levels: Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng), and Engineering Technician (EngTech). Among them, Chartered Engineer (CEng) is the highest level of professional registration. Successful candidates receive certification from the Engineering Council, which is widely recognized in the United Kingdom, the European Union, the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, and many other countries and regions.
